Astrology Basics: Understanding Degrees in Your Birth Chart

When you first look at a birth chart, you may notice that every planet has a number next to it. Maybe your Sun is at 2° Capricorn. Your Moon could be at 18° Cancer. Your Venus might be at 27° Aquarius. But what do those numbers actually mean? Those numbers are called degrees, and they tell us the exact position of a planet within a zodiac sign. If you want to move beyond the basics of simply knowing your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs, learning about degrees is an important next step.

What Is a Degree in Astrology?

The zodiac wheel contains 360 degrees. Those 360 degrees are divided between the 12 zodiac signs. Each sign occupies exactly 30 degrees. So the zodiac looks like this:

Aries: 0°–29°
Taurus: 0°–29°
Gemini: 0°–29°
Cancer: 0°–29°
Leo: 0°–29°
Virgo: 0°–29°
Libra: 0°–29°
Scorpio: 0°–29°
Sagittarius: 0°–29°
Capricorn: 0°–29°
Aquarius: 0°–29°
Pisces: 0°–29°

Once a planet reaches 30°, it moves into the next sign. For example: 29° Leo → 0° Virgo

The degree tells us where within that sign the planet is located.

Why Are Degrees Important?

Knowing that you have a Cancer Moon tells you something important. But knowing you have a Cancer Moon at 23° gives you more information. Degrees allow astrologers to become much more precise when interpreting a chart. They help us understand:

• The exact position of a planet

• How closely planets aspect one another

• Which transits are affecting you

• When an upcoming transit becomes exact

• How close a planet is to changing signs

• The strength and timing of certain astrological influences

This is why professional astrologers often pay close attention to degrees.

The Beginning of a Sign: 0°

The first degree of a sign is 0°. This is the very beginning of that zodiac sign. A planet at 0° is beginning its journey through that sign. For example: Sun at 0° Libra means the Sun has just entered Libra. The 0° placement can symbolize a very concentrated expression of the sign because the planet is beginning a new 30-degree cycle. Some astrologers also consider 0° an especially noticeable or significant degree because it represents new beginnings and initiation.

The End of a Sign: 29°

The final degree of a sign is 29°. This is sometimes called the anaretic degree. A planet at 29° is near the very end of its journey through that sign. For example: Mars at 29° Scorpio means Mars is almost finished moving through Scorpio before entering Sagittarius. Because 29° represents the final degree, many astrologers associate it with themes of completion, urgency, culmination, or intensified lessons. However, it's important not to automatically assume that 29° means something negative. It's simply the final degree of the sign.

What Is a Critical Degree?

You may eventually hear astrologers talk about critical degrees. Certain degrees are traditionally considered more sensitive or emphasized depending on the modality of the sign. For example, some traditional astrology systems identify:

Cardinal signs: 0°, 13°, and 26°

Fixed signs: 8°–9° and 21°–22°

Mutable signs: 4° and 17°

Different astrologers and traditions use slightly different systems. The important thing for beginners is simply understanding that degrees can add another layer of meaning to a placement.

Degrees and Aspects

This is where degrees become especially useful. Remember the previous post about aspects? An aspect occurs when planets are a certain number of degrees apart. For example, imagine:

Sun: 15° Aries
Moon: 15° Gemini

These planets are exactly 60° apart. That creates a sextile. Now imagine:

Sun: 15° Aries
Moon: 18° Gemini

They're still close enough that many astrologers would consider them a sextile, but the aspect isn't exact. The closer the planets are to the exact degree of an aspect, the more precise the aspect is considered. This is called the orb.

Exact Aspects

An exact aspect occurs when planets are at the precise degree needed to create the aspect. For example:

Sun: 20° Taurus
Moon: 20° Scorpio

That's an exact opposition because the planets are exactly 180° apart. Exact aspects are often given special attention because the relationship between the planets is extremely precise. But an aspect doesn't necessarily have to be exact to be meaningful. Astrologers use different orb allowances depending on the planets and the type of aspect. Degrees aren't only useful for understanding your birth chart. They're also incredibly important when studying transits. Let's say you have: Natal Venus at 17° Leo. If a transiting planet reaches 17° Leo, it may form an exact aspect to your Venus. That can mark a particularly noticeable point within a longer transit. This is one reason astrology can sometimes become very specific with timing. Instead of simply saying: "Saturn is transiting your sign," an astrologer can look at the exact degree of Saturn and compare it with the exact degrees of your natal planets. That's where astrology starts becoming much more detailed.

Why Two People With the Same Sign Can Be Different

Imagine two people who are both Taurus Suns. Person A: Sun at 2° Taurus Person B: Sun at 28° Taurus Both are Taurus Suns. But their Suns are located in very different places within the sign. They may also have completely different aspects because their Sun is at a different degree. For example, Person A's Sun might form an exact trine with another planet, while Person B's Sun might form a square. So while the Sun sign gives us the foundation, the degree helps tell us where and how that energy is operating within the larger chart.

Degree Theory: A More Advanced Layer

As you continue learning astrology, you'll eventually come across different systems that assign additional symbolism to individual degrees. One popular example is Sabian Symbols, which associates symbolic imagery with each degree of the zodiac. There are also other degree theories and traditions used by different astrologers. These are more advanced techniques, and you don't need them to understand your birth chart. Start with the basics first: Sign + Planet + House + Aspect + Degree Those five pieces can already tell you a tremendous amount.

How to Find the Degrees in Your Chart

When you generate a birth chart, look at the table or list showing your planetary placements. You'll usually see something similar to:

Sun — 12° Capricorn
Moon — 24° Cancer
Mercury — 3° Aquarius
Venus — 19° Sagittarius
Mars — 7° Libra

The number before the degree symbol tells you exactly where that planet is located within its sign. The little ° symbol simply means "degrees." So: 12° Capricorn means the planet is 12 degrees into Capricorn.

Pull up your birth chart and write down the degrees of your:

• Sun

• Moon

• Mercury

• Venus

• Mars

• Ascendant

• Midheaven

Then look for any planets that are very close in degree. For example, if you have:

Venus — 16° Leo
Mars — 18° Leo

you may have a conjunction between Venus and Mars.

If you have:

Sun — 12° Capricorn
Moon — 13° Cancer

you may have an opposition. Start noticing the numbers. Eventually, you'll begin to see patterns without even needing to calculate everything manually.

The Deeper Lesson

Degrees remind us that astrology is incredibly detailed. Your Sun sign is only the beginning of your story. There is a huge difference between knowing: "I'm a Capricorn." and knowing: "My Sun is at 14° Capricorn in my 11th house, trine my Moon, and square my Ascendant." The first statement gives you a general idea. The second begins telling you a story and that's the beauty of learning astrology. The more you understand the language of the chart, the more clearly you can see how all of the pieces fit together.

1. Which planet has the lowest degree?

2. Which planet has the highest degree?

3. Do you have any planets between 0°–5°?

4. Do you have any planets at 29°?

5. Which planets are closest together by degree?

6. Do any of your planets form exact or nearly exact aspects?

7. What new information did you learn about your chart by looking at the degrees?

Astrology is a language of patterns. The signs give us the vocabulary. The planets give us the characters. The houses give us the setting. The aspects describe the relationships. And the degrees give us the precision. You don't need to memorize every degree or advanced degree theory to become a good astrology student. Start by simply noticing them. Because once you start paying attention to the degrees, you'll begin to see that even the smallest details of your birth chart can tell part of your story.
