Aspects are one of the most important pieces of astrology because they show how the planets in your chart communicate with one another. While the signs tell us how a planet expresses itself and the houses tell us where that energy shows up in your life, aspects tell us how different parts of your personality and life experience work together. What Exactly Is an Aspect?

An aspect occurs when two planets are a specific number of degrees apart from one another in the zodiac. Squares occur when planets are approximately 90° apart. Squares can create tension between different parts of your personality or life. Trine — 120°

A trine occurs when planets are approximately 120° apart. Trines are considered one of the most naturally harmonious aspects. Opposition — 180°

An opposition occurs when two planets are approximately 180° apart. This places two planetary energies directly across from one another. Oppositions can create a strong sense of "me versus something else." They may show up through relationships, other people, or an internal struggle between two opposing needs. The goal isn't necessarily to choose one side. Instead, oppositions often teach us how to find balance between two seemingly different parts of ourselves. Are Aspects Good or Bad?

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is thinking that certain aspects are "good" and others are "bad." Astrology is more nuanced than that. A trine may give you incredible natural ability, but because that energy comes so easily, you may not feel motivated to develop it. A square may create frustration, but that frustration can push you to become incredibly resilient. Aspects to the Ascendant

The Ascendant, or Rising Sign, represents how you approach life, your outward expression, and the lens through which you experience the world. Planets aspecting your Ascendant can strongly influence how your personality is expressed and how others experience you.

What Are Orbs?

You may eventually come across another astrology term called an orb. An orb refers to how close an aspect is to being exact. For example, a perfect trine is 120°. But planets don't necessarily have to be exactly 120° apart for astrologers to consider them trine. A certain amount of distance can still allow the aspect to function. The closer an aspect is to exact, the stronger many astrologers consider its influence to be. Different astrologers use different orb systems, so you may see slightly different interpretations depending on the astrology program or astrologer you're working with.

Aspects Tell the Story Between the Planets

This is where astrology starts becoming much more interesting. Instead of looking at your chart as a collection of unrelated placements, aspects allow you to start seeing the conversation happening between them. Your Sun might say: "This is who I am." Your Moon might say: "This is what I need emotionally." Venus might say: "This is how I love." Mars might say: "This is how I take action."
