Before You Light the October Candle, Decide What You’re Done Carrying
Tonight’s blog post is going to be a little different than others I have written in the past. October starts tomorrow, and before we get into candles, protection spells, ancestor work, and buying another pumpkin we absolutely do not have room for, we need to talk about what we’re bringing with us because you don’t need to bring September’s bullshit into October just because it’s familiar. And yes, I’m including the things you keep saying you’re “over” while checking on them three times a day. I’m just as guilty as everyone else. Respectfully. The end of a month can be a useful little pause. A chance to look at where your energy went, what actually nourished you, and what left you feeling like you needed to lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling for hours. And hours. And hours.. You don’t have to become a whole new person by midnight. But you can decide that something deserves less access to you.
In witchcraft, I’m learning the hard way that intention matters. So does what we repeatedly give our attention to. Think about taking care of that plant your mom gave you without any warning. You water it, give it light, check on it, and make room for it to grow. Our habits get that same kind of care, even the ones we wish would politely fuck off. Sometimes we feed a worry by revisiting it every night. Over and over and over again. Sometimes we feed resentment by agreeing to things we already know we don’t have the bandwidth for. Sometimes we give everyone else our very best and leave ourselves with whatever breadcrumbs are still at the bottom. At least I know I do. This isn’t a reason to blame yourself for having feelings. You’re allowed to care. You’re allowed to grieve. You’re allowed to need time. Time is the only thing that gives us perspective and helps us process things. But it’s worth asking: What am I bringing in and do I actually want more of it?
Maybe you want to pour more into your business, your friendships, your creativity, or a home that feels good to come back to after a long day. Maybe you need to give some attention to the version of yourself who exists outside of being needed by everyone and anyone all the time. She’s still in there… and to be honest she would probably like a snack and five uninterrupted minutes.
Libra Season: Where Do You Fit in the Balance?
In astrology, Libra is associated with relationships, fairness, and balance. Those themes give us something useful to reflect on as September closes. Where has compromise felt mutual? Where have you kept making adjustments while quietly hoping someone would notice how much it costs you? Keeping the peace can become truly exhausting when you’re the one doing all the keeping. Before October begins, take a look at the things you’ve agreed to with other people and with yourself. Some might need an honest conversation. Some might need a firmer boundary. Some might simply need you to stop automatically saying yes before checking whether you really mean it. You are part of the relationship, the household, the friendship, and the total equation. Your needs belong in the balance not just everyone elses. Venus, Libra’s ruling planet, also brings us back to values and pleasure. What really feels worth your time? What makes your life feel beautiful in a way you can actually experience Maybe it’s fresh sheets. Music while you cook or are driving. Making something with your hands. Studying your chart because you’re curious, instead of searching it for an explanation for someone else’s behavior. There’s room for pleasure that doesn’t require you to earn it through exhaustion first.
A Little Threshold Ritual for Tonight
If you want to mark the shift into October, keep it simple. You don’t need seventeen herbs and a ceremonial shopping trip. We’re closing out a month, babe. Use what you have. You’ll need a piece of paper, a pen, a small bowl of water, and an optional candle. An electric candle works, too. Set everything in front of you and take a few slow breaths. Let your shoulders drop. Unclench your jaw. Seriously unclench it. Apparently we’ve all been trying to hold our entire lives together with our teeth.
On your paper, write: “As September ends, I am ready to give less of my energy to…”
Choose something specific enough that you can act on it. “Negativity” is broad. “Saying yes when I’m already overwhelmed” gives you somewhere to begin.
Then write: “As October begins, I am making room for…”
Be honest. You don’t have to choose the thing that sounds the most spiritual. Rest counts. Fun counts. Getting paid for your work counts. Feeling comfortable in your own home counts. Place the bowl of water beside your paper as a symbol of cleansing and movement. If you’re using a candle, light it safely and say:
“At this threshold, I gather my attention.
I honor what I have felt and what I have learned.
I choose what I will tend in the month ahead.
May my time, care, and effort serve what I value.”
Read your two statements aloud. Then choose one small action to support your intention tomorrow. Put the appointment you’ve been putting off on your calendar. Set aside time for your hobby. Leave a little space before answering a request. Give yourself a bedtime you might actually follow. Sleep is good. Keep the intention somewhere you’ll see it. If you want a physical gesture of release, tear off the first part of the paper and discard it. Pour the water down the sink, put out your candle, and let the ritual be finished. You don’t have to keep checking whether you did it powerfully enough.
Releasing something can feel complicated when part of you still wants it. You might be missing a person. You might still feel disappointed by how things happened. You might still wish a situation had worked out differently. A ritual doesn’t require you to pretend those feelings disappeared or dont exist. What you can choose is how much of tonight you spend reopening the same wound. You can decide whether you do or dont have the energy for one more obligation. You can give yourself a little room to enjoy the life happening around you, even while something remains unresolved. That’s a meaningful beginning. So before you light the October candle, take a minute to decide what you want to tend this month. Then give that intention some time, some attention, and a place in your actual life. The candle can set the mood. You still get to make the choices. And please drink some water before deciding you need an elaborate cleansing ritual. It has been a long month. 🖤
