The Fourth House: The Home You Came From and the Home You’re Creating
When someone asks me about the Fourth House, I always want to ask them a question first: What does home feel like to you? I don’t just mean your address. I mean the place where your shoulders drop. The people you can be quiet around. The routines that make you feel safe. The version of yourself that comes out when nobody needs you to perform. The Fourth House is associated with home, family, roots, and our private emotional world. It can describe pieces of the environment we grew up in, but it also asks what we’re doing with that inheritance now. Because sometimes the home we came from taught us exactly what we want to carry forward. And sometimes it taught us what we’re ready to do differently. That’s where this house gets juicy.
The Fourth House can bring up memories, family patterns, traditions, and the things that were never said out loud but somehow everybody knew. Maybe comfort looked like a crowded kitchen and someone making sure you ate. Maybe it looked like being left alone when you were upset. Maybe “home” is a complicated word for you. Your chart isn’t here to tell you that your childhood was one specific thing. It gives you a place to get curious about how you learned to seek safety and whether those old ways still support you. What soothed you then? What did you have to figure out for yourself? What do you want the people you love to feel when they walk through your door?
I love the Fourth House because it reminds us that belonging can be built in small, ordinary moments. It’s the blanket you always reach for. The friend who knows your tea order. The way you speak to yourself after a hard day. And yes, it can be witchy as hell. Cleanse your space if that feels good. Make an altar. Light a candle for your ancestors, your chosen family, or the version of you who needed a softer place to land. But you don’t need an elaborate ritual to work with Fourth House energy. Making yourself dinner and letting yourself rest can be its own kind of magic.
Find the Fourth House in your chart
Look for the sign on your Fourth House cusp, any planets in that house, and the planet that rules its sign. Those pieces add detail to how you experience home and emotional security. They can point toward the atmosphere you’re drawn to or the needs you’re learning to name. If your Fourth House is empty, don’t panic. That doesn’t mean you’re destined to live in a cardboard box or have no connection to your family. Every house matters, whether or not a planet lives there.
As you explore yours, try asking:
Where do I feel most like myself when nobody is watching?
Which family patterns feel worth keeping?
What kind of comfort do I need more of now?
What would make my home—physical or emotional—feel more like mine?
The Fourth House isn’t only about looking backward. It’s about realizing that you have a say in what home becomes, and if you want to learn more about the Fourth House, I have class at 7 pm on October 5th where we will really unpack everything!
A little spell for today: Put both feet on the floor, take one slow breath, and say: I am allowed to create a life where I feel safe enough to be myself.
